Yet another approach to blogging (trying to find my voices)
OK, I’m horrifically conflicted about how to use my blog(s), and what I should be using it for, I admit it.
It is because I want to do more than one kind of writing. I’d like to keep an online “journal of musing”, and “random personal notes about my life” (without, hopefully, having it degenerate into the “homework sucks!” level of whining that an ex-associate claimed typified 98% of blogging out there), and I’d like to do some “serious” writing as well. I guess I have aspirations of being an essayist: to have something worthwhile to actually say and enough skill to say it in a meaningful way. I don’t know how close I come to that aspiration yet, nor how close I have the potential to get, but it is something I’d like to do.
The problem is that blogs are meant for public consumption, and to be blunt, the public is fickle. I don’t really care if no one cares to read my personal ramblings other than a handful of family, but I’d rather like people to read the serious tracts. Sure, that’s a bit of ego speaking there, but also people can’t give feedback, or comment on your ideas, unless they read them first. Scattering a few “serious” pieces in amongst a flurry of comments about my day, commuting in Toronto, and the price of coffee at the local bistro won’t let them find a readership.
I’ve tried a number of approaches, and this is just the latest – but I think it has a better chance than most. I’m going to run the two blogs in parallel, and divide them not by topic, but by tone. Subjective and personal gets put here: a venue for subjecting and first-person writing. Where I want to write with an impersonally biased and balanced approach – more academic than rant in tone – I’ll publish that one in Memetic Syns.
That’s the plan; we’ll see how it goes.
In any case it should prompt me to actually write. Output has stalled, basically because I havn’t had much time to do much “serious” writing, and I didn’t want to put “frivoulous” writing in Memetic Syns, so no writing got done at all.
We’ll see if that changes …
